Editing Inspiration

Kurt Cobain: Montage of Heck

Montage of Heck is a documentary following the life of Kurt Cobain from his toddler years leading up to the news of his suicide.
This documentary houses a mixture of home videos, animations and stills which really helps the audience to get inside the mind of Kurt Cobain and find out what he was really like as a person and not as a rock star.
The use of home videos makes the documentary feel more realistic and personal as the audience is being shown actual videos of Kurt as a child.
The use of stills is effective as it gives the audience something to focus on and they are often a range of still images of Kurt to paintings and diary entries written by him.
The animations help the documentary producer to recreate parts of Cobain's life that weren't documented at the time which also allows the audience to imagine the situation.

Breezeblocks - alt-J

The way this music video is edited is very effective as it is all in reverse, this technique could be used in my music video as it is based on memories and the past.
The dark colours used throughout the video suggest a bleak and negative atmosphere and immediately indicate that something bad has happened.

In Guns We Trust

In Guns We Trust

The short film/documentary above explores the american gun culture and how various people feel about the gun laws in the US.

This is a really well edited documentary for various reasons:

- Colour Treatment: The documentary is all in black at white, this portrays a negative feel throughout the film. It also evokes various feelings of sorrow and makes in quite harrowing to watch.
- Camera Takes: during this short documentary film there is a mixture of video clips and stills. This is effective because it allows the audience to take in all the aspects of the images but also allows them to see into the world of guns.
- Voice Overs/ Interviews: throughout the film there are interviews and voice overs from various people voicing their opinions on the gun laws in the U.S. This allows the audience to consider other people's opinions, and the voice over means that the audience have something to look at other than watching a person speak.

Briefs

During the course his year we have been given a choice of thirteen briefs, this gives us a wide range of projects to choose from. Below are the three briefs that I am the most interested in:

-A promotion package for the release of an album, to include a music promo video, together with two of the following three options:
         - A website homepage for the band
-A cover for its release on DVD
         - A magazine advertisement for the DVD

I am very interested in this brief as I have a great love for music and the music industry, I also enjoy watching the music videos produced by the bands and artist that I like listening to. I would also require me to gain new skills which would exoand my experience for future projects.

- An extract from a new documentary TV programme, lasting approximately five minutes, together with two of the following three options:
        - A radio trailer for the documentary
        - A double-page spread from a listings magazine focused on the documentary
        - A newspaper advertisement for the documentary

This brief appeals to me as i fell that i have gained many skills from my coursework last year that would help me to enhance this project and get a professional looking outcome.

- An extract from a radio play, lasting approximately five minutes, together with two of the following three options:
        - A newspaper advertisement for the play
        - a double-page listings magazine feature about the play
        - A page from a radio station's website promoting the play.

I like this brief as I believe that it would be quite an easy task which would allow me to improve and tweak it as much as possible in order to make it sound and look as professional as possible

AS Overview

'And So It Happened'

Synopsis

Our media product is focused on the horror genre and it is based around a paranormal reporter/detective who is telling the tale of her experience with a paranormal entity that she had discovered in an abandoned barn after she uncovered some suspicious pieces of evidence regarding many years of back logged missing childrens cases. Our idea orignally stemmed from our shared love of horror movies and the already available location, we decided that this would be the best genre for us to choose as we had all watch many paranormal horror movies in the past which gave us an insight into what works and what doesn't.

Areas of Success

  • In our opening sequence there are many areas of success which helped us to excell in our course, the first example of an ares of success is the effective planning and time management which we used in order to get our product finished for the deadline. The planning was helpful because it meant that we had enough time to film, edit and evaluate our product with out having to rush the end so that our full ability was shown through our AS blogs.
  • A second example of an area of success in our product it the effective use of our own initiative whilst filming our product, for example, the sound of the birds in the begining of the opening sequence was thought of on set which cmae in hands because it made the scene sound more realistic and helped to set the desolate scene as you could only hear birds singing but no other people around.
  • Another area of success was our understanding and use of the software that we used to edit our clip. The software we used was called Serif Movie Plus X6, this software was fantastic to use as the control were quite simple wich helped us to gain an understanding of how it worked quickly in order for us to get on with editing out piece. This software was ideal because it alloowed us to manipulate all of the clips we captured whilst filming and allowed us to cut them all to the right length so only the relavent clips were included in the final piece.
  • A final area of success is that our final piece fits well and represents our chosen genre, the use of the sound track, location, props, etc. allowed us to create an opening sequence which clearly reflects the horror genre.

Areas of Improvement

  • Although we had many areas of success we also had a few areas of improvment which could have been worked on in order to help us get a higher grade. One area of improvement would be the quality of filming and equiment. This is because for the majority of the clips we didn't use a tripod or anything to keep the camera stable which later resulted in some of the clips being unstable and wobbly, where using a tripod would have prevented this.
  • We could have also used improved out use of props as we made a long list of props that we wanted to include in our opening sequence, but we only used a fraction of what we were originally going to conclude. This is because we either didn't own the items in the first place and didn't have enough time to order them online, or we couldn't find them in our own homes. The use of more props would have enhanced our piece making it look more believeable and may have helped us to gain a higher mark. However, we did use the props we had effectively in order to creat the correct atmosphere and build up the scene.
  • A final example of an area of improvement would be the overall run-timeof the piece because at the beginning when the character is walking into the building there isn.t very much else going on which could lead the audience to feel bored when watching it. eaqually with when she was looking around the office room she spent a lot of time looking at irrelevant things rather than getting to the point, however out overall opening sequence had to be at least 2.5 minutes so we had to make a few shots longer in  order to reach this time frame.
